Tanzania is East Africa's classic safari country and the anchor of the northern safari circuit: Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire sit within a few hours' drive of each other, and Mount Kilimanjaro and the island of Zanzibar are both reachable on the same trip. Few countries let you combine a big-cat safari, a high-altitude trek, and a beach finish with so little backtracking. Tourism here is well established: English-speaking guides, a wide range of camps and lodges from budget tented sites to fly-in luxury, and a road and airstrip network built specifically around moving travelers between parks.

Best time to visit
The dry season from late June to October is the most reliable window for game viewing across the northern parks: vegetation thins out and animals gather at permanent water sources, so sightings come easily. If witnessing the wildebeest migration is the priority, timing matters more than season: calving happens in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area from December to March, river crossings happen in the western corridor around June and in the north around August to October. The long rains fall from March to May, when many camps close or drop their rates substantially, and short rains fall in November, which are lighter and rarely disrupt travel.
High season
July through October is the busiest and most expensive stretch, driven by both the northern migration crossings and the Northern Hemisphere summer holidays. Late December into early January is a secondary peak around the festive season. Booking camps six to twelve months ahead is common in these windows, especially for smaller tented camps with limited beds.
Tanzania holds the classic Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and both black and white rhino, though rhino sightings are rare and mostly limited to Ngorongoro. The Serengeti ecosystem supports the largest terrestrial mammal migration on Earth, over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra moving in an annual circuit. Tarangire is known for its elephant herds and ancient baobabs. Away from the northern circuit, Mahale and Gombe on Lake Tanganyika hold some of Africa's last wild chimpanzee populations, though these require additional flights and are not currently covered by our listed tours.
