The Machame route, known as the Whiskey route, is the most scenic way up Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m). Over seven days you walk through five distinct climate zones: rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone. This itinerary follows the climb high, sleep low principle, giving your body the best chance to acclimatize and pushing summit success rates above 90 percent. Your crew includes a licensed lead guide, assistant guides, a cook, and porters, all employed under fair-treatment guidelines with proper mountain clothing and three meals a day. All camping equipment (four-season tents, dining tent, chairs) is included. Daily health checks with a pulse oximeter keep you safe as you gain altitude.

After registration at the gate the trail climbs steadily through dense montane rainforest, home to colobus monkeys, turacos, and giant tree ferns. The forest drips with moss and the trail can be muddy, so gaiters help. Distance about 11 km, 5 to 7 hours walking. At Machame Camp the forest thins into heather and you get your first clear look at Kibo, the summit cone.
A shorter but steeper day out of the forest into open moorland covered with giant heather and lobelia. The trail follows a rocky ridge with wide views back over the clouds. Distance about 5 km, 4 to 6 hours. Shira 2 sits on a high plateau, the remains of an ancient collapsed volcano, with dramatic sunsets over Mount Meru to the west.
The key acclimatization day. You climb steadily to Lava Tower, a 90 meter volcanic plug at 4,600 m, where most people feel the altitude, then descend into the Barranco Valley to sleep 600 meters lower. This climb high, sleep low profile is why Machame has such strong summit rates. The valley is filled with surreal giant groundsels, plants found almost nowhere else on Earth.
The day starts with the famous Barranco Wall, a 257 meter natural staircase that looks intimidating but needs no technical climbing, just hands-on scrambling in a few places. From the top you traverse rolling ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. Distance about 5 km, 4 to 5 hours. The afternoon is for rest, hydration, and an acclimatization briefing.
A short 4 km morning walk through alpine desert brings you to Barafu, the summit base camp perched on an exposed ridge. The afternoon is dedicated to rest and an early dinner. Your guides check your gear: headlamp, insulated water, summit layers. Lights out by 7:00 PM; the summit push starts around midnight.
You start climbing at midnight under headlamps. The switchbacks up the scree to Stella Point (5,756 m) are the hardest hours of the trek, in temperatures as low as minus 15 C. From Stella Point a gentler 45 minute ridge walk brings you to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa, in time for sunrise over the glaciers. After photos you descend all the way to Mweka Camp, a total of about 17 km walking. Your crew celebrates with you at camp.
A final three hour descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where successful climbers receive their summit certificates: green for Stella Point, gold for Uhuru Peak. Transfer back to your Moshi or Arusha hotel by early afternoon. Tipping ceremony with your crew happens at the gate.
