Keep an eye out for blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and diverse bird species before arriving at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight.
Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m Hiking Time: 5-6 hours Habitat: Moorland The trail leaves the forest and opens into the scenic moorland zone, offering spectacular panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, leading up to the sprawling Horombo Hut for overnight.
Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m Hiking Time: 5-6 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert You will ascend past the "Last Water Point" and cross the eerie, barren alpine desert saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, reaching Kibo Hut early to rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (and down to 3,720m) Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascending, 4-6 hours descending Habitat: Arctic / Moorland Starting around midnight, you will begin the steep and demanding climb up frozen scree to Gilman’s Point, then proceed along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak—the roof of Africa. After celebrating your summit success, you will descend back down to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing further down to Horombo Hut for overnight.
Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Rainforest Your final descent takes you steadily down through the moorland and lush tropical rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Here, successful climbers are awarded their official summit certificates before being picked up and transferred back to your hotel in Moshi.
