This 3-day private Tanzania safari from Arusha combines three very different experiences in northern Tanzania — wildlife in Tarangire, the extraordinary landscape and wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater, and encounters with the Hadzabe, Datoga and Maasai. In Tarangire National Park, you explore open savannah landscapes with ancient baobab trees and large elephant herds, offering a classic introduction to northern Tanzania’s wildlife. The journey continues to the Ngorongoro Crater, a unique volcanic caldera and one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife areas. A full-day game drive takes you through the crater’s exceptional landscape, with the opportunity to see a wide variety of wildlife and, with luck, the Big Five. The third day moves beyond wildlife into living Tanzanian cultures. You visit the Hadzabe, Datoga and Maasai, learning about their different traditions, ways of life and skills — from the Hadzabe’s hunting and gathering traditions to the Datoga’s traditional metalworking and the Maasai’s livestock-based way of life. This private safari combines wildlife, extraordinary landscapes and living cultures in one three-day journey, with flexibility throughout the safari. The safari starts and ends in Arusha.

Your safari begins with pick-up from your hotel in Arusha. The departure time is flexible — you can leave very early and arrive at Tarangire National Park around sunrise, or have breakfast first and arrive later in the morning. The drive from Arusha to Tarangire takes approximately 2 hours. Spend the day on a game drive in Tarangire National Park, with a picnic lunch at one of the park’s designated picnic sites. In the afternoon, leave Tarangire and drive approximately 2 hours to Karatu, where you will stay near the entrance gates to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Dinner and overnight at Hhando Coffee Lodge in Karatu.
Your day begins with an early morning departure from Karatu and a drive to the entrance of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. After entering the conservation area, it takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint, followed by another 30-minute drive to the crater gates. From there, you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day game drive. Spend the day exploring the crater’s unique landscape and wildlife, with a picnic lunch in the crater. With some luck, you may have the opportunity to see all of Africa’s Big Five in a single day. In the afternoon, continue the game drive before ascending from the crater and returning to Karatu. Dinner and overnight at Hhando Coffee Lodge in Karatu.
Your final day focuses on three different traditional cultures of northern Tanzania — the Hadzabe, Datoga and Maasai. If you are interested in experiencing the Hadzabe’s traditional morning hunting, you can leave early and join them. If an early start is not for you, you can begin later and spend more time learning about Hadzabe culture, language and traditional way of life. After the Hadzabe experience, continue to a traditional Datoga village, where you can learn about Datoga culture and traditional skills, including their metalworking traditions. The final cultural experience is a visit to a traditional Maasai village, offering an opportunity to learn about Maasai culture, traditions and their pastoralist way of life. Lunch is included during the day. After the Maasai visit, continue the journey back to Arusha, arriving in the evening.
