This 2-day private Tanzania safari from Arusha takes you to Mkomazi National Park, one of Tanzania’s lesser-visited wilderness destinations, known for its black rhino sanctuary and African wild dog conservation programme. Mkomazi’s semi-arid savannah, mountains and open landscapes offer a different safari experience from Tanzania’s better-known parks, with relatively few visitors and a quieter wilderness atmosphere. The safari includes game drives and a visit to the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary, with opportunities to see protected black rhinos and look for African wild dogs in their natural habitat. Mkomazi is also home to elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, lions and leopards. With some luck, you may even encounter all of Africa’s Big Five. An overnight stay inside Mkomazi National Park means you can experience the park during the late afternoon, evening and early morning, when wildlife viewing is particularly rewarding, without losing time travelling outside the park. This is a private safari for travelers looking for rare wildlife, fewer visitors and a genuine wilderness experience. June to December is particularly recommended for wildlife viewing, when animals are more likely to concentrate around the park’s remaining water sources. The safari starts and ends in Arusha.

After breakfast, depart from your hotel in Arusha and drive to Mkomazi National Park (approximately 4 hours). On a clear day, you may have an opportunity to see Mount Kilimanjaro along the way. Arrive around lunchtime and enjoy a lunch box before starting an afternoon game drive through Mkomazi’s open savannah. In the late afternoon, return to the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) cottages inside the park. In the evening, enjoy time around the campfire with a park ranger, experiencing Mkomazi after dark. Dinner and overnight in a TANAPA cottage inside Mkomazi National Park.
Start the day with an early morning game drive in Mkomazi National Park, driving towards the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary. The early hours offer good opportunities to see wildlife before reaching the sanctuary. Visit the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary and see black rhinos in their protected environment. After the visit, continue with game drives through Mkomazi National Park, with opportunities to look for African wild dogs and other wildlife. Lunch is provided as a lunch box, allowing you to stay out in the park and make the most of your wildlife-viewing time. Your park entry is valid for 24 hours. After exiting the park, continue to Arusha, arriving in the afternoon.
