7 days
The Umbwe Route is the most direct and arguably the most demanding trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. It rises steeply through dense rainforest from the southern side of the mountain, gaining altitude quickly and offering a raw, uncrowded experience from the very first day. The route sees far fewer trekkers than other paths, keeping the trails narrow and the atmosphere genuinely remote. After reaching Barranco Camp, Umbwe joins the Southern Circuit and follows the same trail as the Machame Route toward the summit, which provides better acclimatisation in the upper section of the climb. Umbwe is best suited for experienced trekkers who have spent time at high altitude before. The rapid initial altitude gain is unforgiving to those without proper preparation. The 6-day version includes an important extra acclimatisation day and is recommended for anyone considering this route.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Umbwe Gate, approximately 80 km from Arusha. Following registration, the trek begins with a steep ascent through dense montane rainforest. The trail is narrow and less frequently used, offering a remote and adventurous experience. The forest is rich in birdlife and wildlife, adding to the uniqueness of the climb. After 5-7 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp, located at the edge of the forest zone. Dinner will be served, followed by overnight rest.

As you gain altitude, the forest begins to thin and the trail follows a steep ridge with dramatic views of the Western Breach. The terrain becomes more open, with unique high-altitude vegetation such as giant lobelias and senecios. Later in the day, you descend into the Barranco Valley. Barranco Camp is located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall, offering spectacular views of Kibo Peak.
The day begins with the ascent of the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble that provides an exciting challenge. After reaching the top, the trail descends into the Karanga Valley before climbing again to Karanga Camp. This shorter day is designed to aid acclimatization and allow your body to adjust to the increasing altitude. You will arrive at camp early, giving you time to rest and recover.
Today's trek crosses the alpine desert landscape on the southern slopes of Kibo. The trail is dry, exposed, and steadily ascends toward Barafu Camp. Barafu Camp serves as your base camp for the summit attempt. Upon arrival, you will rest, hydrate, and prepare your equipment. Dinner is served early, and you will sleep for a few hours before beginning the night ascent.
The summit attempt begins around midnight. The climb is steep, slow, and physically demanding, requiring determination and endurance. After several hours of ascent, you will reach Stella Point on the crater rim, often at sunrise. From there, you continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit is the highlight of the climb.
After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and breakfast. The descent continues along the Mweka Trail, passing through alpine desert and into lower vegetation zones. The walk is long and can be tiring, but the lower altitude makes breathing easier. You will spend the night at Mweka Camp.
The final day is a gentle descent through rainforest. The trail can be wet and slippery, so caution is advised. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you will receive your summit certificates before being transferred back to your hotel.
