The Ngorongoro Crater is normally visited as part of a multi-day safari, but for travelers with only one free day, it is possible to descend, explore, and return to Arusha before nightfall. This is a long day, leaving before dawn, but delivers one of Africa's most concentrated wildlife experiences: around 25,000 large animals in a single 260 square kilometer caldera.
Depart Arusha before dawn, arrive at the crater rim by mid-morning and descend for a half-day game drive on the crater floor, spotting lion, elephant, flamingo, and possibly black rhino. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool, ascend in the afternoon, and drive back to Arusha, arriving after dark.
